Tuition & Affordability

Accessible, High-Quality Education In Newport News

We believe an education is an investment in your child’s future, and at Hampton Roads Academy, our goal is to provide an enriching experience in more than just academics to students in Pre-K through 12th grade. We offer need-based financial aid, monthly payment plans and more in order to make an HRA education a reality to all interested students and their families in Hampton Roads.

Financial Aid

We offer need-based financial aid to students in Grades 5 through 12. The amount of aid awarded is determined on an individual student basis by each student’s demonstrated financial need. The need for financial aid is reviewed annually and requires students to submit a new application every year.

Our goal is to make our school affordable for all students. At HRA:

  • Over $1 million is granted in need-based financial aid annually

  • 25% of HRA students receive need-based financial aid—that’s over 150 students!

ANNUAL FEES

We believe in transparency when it comes to tuition and affordability, including fees associated with your child’s education. We want parents and families to understand how the required annual fees are used to benefit their child’s education and daily life at our school. These fees include:

A tuition deposit is due in February with the signed enrollment contract in order to ensure a place in that class for your student(s). This deposit will be credited to next year’s tuition. Tuition deposits are as follows:

    • Pre-Kindergarten / Junior Kindergarten – $1,000
    • Lower School (K – Grade 4) – $1,000
    • Middle School (Grade 5) – $1,000
    • Middle School (Grade 6 – Grade 8) – $1,500
    • Upper School (Grade 9 – Grade 12) – $1,500
    • Annual Activity Fee (PreK-12)- $400 Annual Activity Fee.

Lower School (PreK-Grade 4) and Middle School (Grade 5) books and materials fee is $330. Middle (Grades 6-8) and Upper School books are the responsibility of the parent or caretaker.

In the event a student has to leave early during the school year, the The Tuition Refund Plan (TRP) provides a prorated reimbursement of tuition. Families with monthly payment plans will automatically be enrolled in the Tuition Refund Plan, but we highly encourage families paying up front to join as well. Learn more about our payment plans.

Charges vary depending on the sport, but may include a small fee for uniform, shoes, a combination lock and more.

Morning and afternoon bus service to Williamsburg, Smithfield/Suffolk and Gloucester is available.

Parents and caretakers are responsible for purchasing the Lower and Middle School uniforms. Please see the Student Handbooks for more on the Lower School dress code and Middle School dress code.

PAYMENT PLANS AT HAMPTON ROADS ACADEMY

Paying for your child’s education should be as easy and convenient as possible. In order to accommodate different needs when it comes to tuition and affordability, parents or caretakers can either:

  • Pay HRA directly in full prior to the start of the school year (and avoid The Tuition Refund Plan Fee).

  • Enroll in a monthly payment plan through Blackbaud Tuition Management, our third party vendor that offers interest-free plans with only an annual enrollment fee. Payment plans can be accessed in the HRA Blackbaud Tuition Management portal.

PAYING TUITION WITH 529 PLANS

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act now permits individuals with Virgnia529 college savings to withdraw up to $10,000 annually, tax-free, for expenses related to elementary and high school education, including tuition and books. You can receive an income tax deduction of up to $4,000 per account a year for contributions to a Virginia529 plan, with the option for an unlimited carry forward of excess contributions. Contributions made by taxpayers 70 years and older are fully deductible in the year of contribution.

If you are considering using a 529 account for HRA tuition payments, we recommend speaking to financial and tax professionals first to ensure a withdrawal is appropriate for you.
