Hampton Roads Academy thrives with the vibrant energy of students on campus—engaged in learning, exploring, and forging new connections. As summer approaches and the academic year draws to a close, our faculty and staff refuse to let the campus fall silent. Instead, we infuse it with life through a dynamic array of summer camps and programs designed to inspire and ignite the curiosity of young minds.

HRA’s summer offerings extend an open invitation to all current students and eager learners from the wider community. Whether they’re passionate about diving into their favorite subjects or exploring new activities, our summer camps provide an enriching environment where students can grow, learn, and have fun.

ADVENTURE DAY CAMPS

Cost: $325/week (unless indicated)

Time: 7:30 am-4:00 pm

  • Adventure Day Camp: Grades 1 – 6
  • Little Navigators Day Camp: Children aged 3 – 5
  • Morning activities will follow the weekly theme with indoor/outdoor games and crafts
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons are outdoor pool days
  • Friday afternoon is a park day
  • Wednesday afternoon will be either Bounce House or Bowling
  • Price includes lunch and snacks each day

Get This Party Started! Kick off the summer at HRA. Games, sports, crafts, and team building will get your camper ready for an awesome summer. We will be out and about this week with field trips galore.  

Magic Circus Adventures! Campers explore their creative and silly side by discovering and developing their circus and performing arts skills. Circus arts taught include juggling, balloon twisting, plate spinning, clowning, face painting, magic tricks, and more! A Magic and Balloon Show will take place on Friday with Balloon Creatures by Susan. Campers show off their new skills at the end of the week with their own Cirque du Camp performance!

World Cup Extravaganza! Come and join us as we explore the countries playing in the World Cup and play a different sport each day. We will “travel” to places like Brazil, Mexico, and Italy, while learning flags, culture, and more. Sports this week include, soccer, football, baseball, dodgeball, and many more.  

It’s a Zoo! Come and explore animals of all kinds and from all countries. We may even fit in a trip to the Norfolk Zoo.

Star Spangled Celebration! This week, we will celebrate all things patriotic. 

Slime Time! This week will be messy and lots of fun.

Seashore Fun! Come with us as we visit the seashore with water games, sand art, beach buckets, and more. Participate in a Luau, make a lei, and end the week with a trip to the beach, where we will collect shells, play beach volleyball, and have a picnic.

Disney Dayz! Who is your favorite Disney Character? Get ready to represent them this week with our Disney theme! Come dressed as a Disney character, memorize some Disney tunes, and get ready for the magic of Disney because this week is going to be awesome!

End of Summer Chill! We will close out the summer with our favorites from weeks gone by.

Specialty Camps

ACADEMICS

This camp will include activities that strengthen fine motor skills.  We will complete tasks that include lacing, cutting, coloring, stamping, molding, and finger plays as extensions to fiction literature selections that reinforce reading concepts.  We will also introduce proper pencil grip as well as capital letter identification and letter formation.  This camp is recommended for students ages 4 and up.

To prepare your student for Kindergarten, this camp will target lower case and upper case letter identification, sounds, and handwriting formation.  We will also practice numeral recognition and basic mathematical skills of sorting, graphing, patterning, counting sets up to 20, addition, and subtraction in a hands on format with manipulatives.  Skills will be practiced within the framework of a “Back to School” theme and as extensions to fictional literature selections.

This camp will include practicing skills to prepare your student for First Grade.  We will cover letter identification, letter sounds, letter formation, reading strategies, and word attack skills.  We will also engage in writing activities related to literature while covering the book knowledge basics of identifying the author, illustrator, and title as well as describing a story’s beginning, middle, and end.  To practice math skills, we will review numeral identification and use manipulatives to complete activities involving number sense, addition, subtraction, and graphing.

This camp will include practicing skills to prepare your student for Second Grade. We will cover basic letter sounds and include blends, digraphs, and vowel teams while practicing reading independence strategies. We will also complete writing activities with an emphasis on recording complete thoughts with capitalization and end marks. For math skills we will review math facts up to 20 with hands on materials and with quick fact recall games. Practice with counting money, telling time, and fractions will also be included.

SPORTS

We’ve got spirit, YES, we do! We’ve got spirit, how about you? Come spend some time learning the basics of Cheerleading (motions, cheers, jumps and dances) from the Varsity Cheerleading Coaches at Hampton Roads Academy. Every day will be something new. Be ready to WOW the crowd with a short routine at the end of camp to show off all that you learned!

Fencing is a sport that builds character and confidence and demands physical and mental discipline. Students at Miracle Fencing Club participate in drills, conditioning, and games which will build good fencing habits that will serve them at every level of competition. Students will learn the basics of fencing, including footwork and blade work, and also build their strategic knowledge and decision-making abilities.

Lunch not provided. Please pack a healthy lunch or drop off lunch at 12:00 noon. Lunch break will be between 12:00 pm and 12:40 pm. Please wear gym clothes and clean tennis shoes. Bring water, lunch, and snacks.

No equipment is needed—the club will provide.  Please wear athletic clothing and shoes.

Campers will be taken to the Miracle Fencing Club on HRA buses.  The bus will leave HRA each day promptly at 9:40 am for a 10:00 am camp start time and return to HRA by 2:20 pm.  Students may remain at HRA until camp dismissal at 4:00 pm at no extra cost. You can drop off at HRA as early as 7:30 am at no extra cost.

Join us for an exciting and action-packed summer at our Soccer Development Camp! This camp is designed for boys and girls in Grades 5-8 who are interested in playing middle school soccer, want to improve their skills, or are just starting out and eager to learn. Whether you’re looking to get ready for the school season or simply love the game, this camp has something for everyone!

Coach RZ, the middle school boys soccer coach, will lead the camp, helping players develop their skills in a fun, supportive environment. The focus will be on building a strong foundation in soccer basics, including dribbling, passing, shooting, and understanding the rules of the game. Each day will include skill-building drills and scrimmages to help players grow and gain confidence on the field.

All skill levels are welcome! This camp is the perfect opportunity to improve, have fun, and make new friends. Don’t miss out on the chance to train with Coach RZ and take your soccer skills to the next level! See you on the field!

Your child will experience the James River like never before through Deep Creek Landing’s Summer Sailing Camp, hosted with Hampton Roads Academy. Camp runs Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with a lunch break around noon (families may pack lunch or pre-purchase a $5/day Snack Pack from our Ship Store). Wednesdays are Pirate Day, so sailors are encouraged to bring their best pirate gear and “pirate talk,” and Fridays include a Parent Day, where families are welcome to come take photos and watch their sailor show off new skills on the water.

Transportation will be provided from HRA to Deep Creek Landing. The bus will leave HRA each day at 8:40 am promptly and return by 3:50 pm. This is included in the price. HRA camp opens at 7:30 am, so you can drop off early if needed at no extra charge. A waiver and handbook are required to be signed prior to camp.

River Guppies (ages 5-7) – Space is limited to 6 per camp.

Intro-to-sailing program focused on fun, water confidence, and foundational skills.

These camps will be directed by HRA Varsity Tennis Coach Marvin Hedgepeth who, in addition to coaching high school tennis for more than 30 years, has been a certified professional tennis instructor with the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) since 1988.

While beginner and intermediate camps will include physical conditioning, resistance training, and drills, the primary focus of the beginner camps will be learning how to properly execute the serve, forehand, and backhand. The intermediate camps will include more games and supervised play in both singles and doubles. Campers will be divided by level of play.

JUNIOR SCIENCES

Let the tinkering begin! Campers will get hands-on with LEGO® bricks to construct various engineering themed projects. From assembling a space station to building boats and vehicles, campers will explore the many facets of engineering. Your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real world design challenges, while developing their problem solving and team building skills. Each day features a take-home project your camper built and can use at home with other LEGO® sets.

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! This week of crazy chemistry is packed solid with cool reactions. Campers put on some goggles and change liquids to solid and back again. They get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes. Campers will also compete in the Slime Olympics!

Use your skills as a creepy chemist to make your own radically gross reactions with batteries, coins, and more! Make “brain goo” and get into your “guts” with an introduction to the circulatory, respiratory, digestive systems, and more. Discover cool and yucky chemical reactions in this hands-on science adventure!

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space!  From the Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends children on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars, and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch!

Calling all actors! This is your chance to improve your skill in a supportive, friendly environment. Step into the stories of the past at American Girl History & Imagination Camp! Designed for students in grades 2–5, this engaging camp brings history to life through the beloved American Girl characters and their worlds. Each day, campers explore a different American Girl doll and the historical era she represents through hands-on activities, storytelling, and creative projects. Campers will enjoy doll-friendly tea parties, themed crafts, games, and discussions that highlight daily life, traditions, and important moments in American history. Through imaginative play and age-appropriate lessons, students gain a deeper understanding of how children lived in different times and places.  This camp encourages creativity, empathy, and curiosity while blending history with play in a welcoming, social environment. Campers are welcome to bring their favorite American Girl doll or similar doll to join in the fun.

Step right into a musical zoo! Carnival of the Animals Music Camp is a joyful, hands-on music experience for children ages 3–5, inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals. Through listening, singing, movement, and imaginative play, young musicians explore music while meeting lions, elephants, birds, and more—one animal at a time. Each day, campers listen to selections from Carnival of the Animals and discover how music can sound fast or slow, loud or soft, high or low. Children will sing songs, move like animals, play simple rhythm instruments, and practice foundational skills such as steady beat, musical listening, vocal exploration, and expressive movement. This nurturing, age-appropriate camp encourages creativity, curiosity, and a love of music while introducing classical music in a fun and accessible way. No prior music experience needed—just imagination and a love of animals!

Embark on a musical journey with The Music Post, where each day brings the enchantment of a new instrument and the joy of building foundational music skills. Students will be able to try each instrument BEFORE you invest hundreds of dollars in lessons! Instruments introduced this week include: Violin, Piano, Cello, Voice, Guitar, Ukulele, Flute, and Percussion. Students will love being able to ensemble together through percussion and create their own notable music to present to the other campers at the end of the week.

Let your child sing, dance, act, and read their way into learning! Our music & literacy camp is a joyful, play-based experience designed especially for preschoolers ages 3–5. Through Dr. Seuss-styled music, theatre, and early literacy activities, children build confidence, creativity, and foundational pre-reading skills—all while having fun. Each day, campers explore songs, movement, dramatic play, and storytelling to strengthen listening skills, vocabulary, letter awareness, rhythm, and imagination. Children will act out stories, play musical games, experiment with sounds and instruments, and participate in group activities that support social-emotional growth and self-expression. Come experience fun in the Dr. Seuss way!

Join our Drawing Club, where creativity takes the wheel, imaginations run wild, and every blank page holds endless possibilities! Kids will bring to life a giant robot bursting with personality, an irresistibly lovable cactus, and, of course, everyone’s favorite quirky creature, the capybara. With step-by-step guidance that makes creating fun and effortless, they’ll turn doodles and details into colorful masterpieces. Unleash the artist within, grab those pencils and brushes, and let’s draw!

Wouldn’t it be fun to create EDIBLE art? In this camp, we will have daily themes where we create art, enjoy media and books, and make wonderful creations with edible ingredients. This is a dynamic, half-day, one-week experience for middle and high school musicians who want to grow as jazz performers while connecting with a thriving independent-school music program. Students work with professional educators in big bands, combos, and instrument-specific sectionals focused on swing style, improvisation, rhythm section technique, jazz articulation, and ensemble balance. The camp is open to saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drum set players from across the region.

Each day includes masterclasses, listening labs, guided improvisation, and coached rehearsals in Hampton Roads Academy’s state-of-the-art performing arts facility. The week concludes with a live performance for families, giving students a chance to showcase their growth and experience the excitement of performing in a collegiate-style jazz setting.

Calling all music hunters! K-Pop Hunter Music Camp is an exciting, creative music experience for students in grades 2–5 who love K-pop and want to learn how music is made. Campers will “hunt” for musical skills through hands-on activities that build a strong foundation in rhythm, melody, singing, and music creation. Each day, students explore beat-making, vocal techniques, songwriting basics, and musical form using age-appropriate K-pop–inspired activities and games. Campers will create their own melodies and rhythms, collaborate in small groups, and learn how producers and performers build songs from the ground up. OUTDOORS & EXPLORATION

Campers will become legal recreational drone pilots by passing the FAA Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST).  They will learn to fly several types of drones, practice drone racing through obstacle courses, parachute drops, and search and rescue missions.  In addition to learning how to safely fly drones, campers will learn the ICAO Phonetic Alphabet, how to read aviation weather reports, how to program a drone, and how to take pictures and videos with the drone. Campers will build a drone from a kit and take it home at the end of the week. No previous drone experience is required.

Hands-on summer experience where students learn how to tend crops from seeds to harvest. Students will dig, plant, water, weed, and care for fruits, vegetables, and herbs while discovering what plants need to grow and thrive.
