Hampton Roads Academy thrives with the vibrant energy of students on campus—engaged in learning, exploring, and forging new connections. As summer approaches and the academic year draws to a close, our faculty and staff refuse to let the campus fall silent. Instead, we infuse it with life through a dynamic array of summer camps and programs designed to inspire and ignite the curiosity of young minds.

HRA’s summer offerings extend an open invitation to all current students and eager learners from the wider community. Whether they’re passionate about diving into their favorite subjects or exploring new activities, our summer camps provide an enriching environment where students can grow, learn, and have fun.

ADVENTURE DAY CAMPS

Cost: $325/week (unless indicated) – Time: 7:30-4:00 pm

  • Adventure Day Camp – Grades: 1 st -6 th
  • Little Navigators Day Camp – 3-5 year olds
  • Morning activities will follow the weekly theme with indoor/outdoor games and crafts.
  • Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are outdoor pool days
  • Friday afternoon is a park day
  • Wednesday afternoon will be either Bounce House or Bowling
  • Price includes lunch and snacks each day.

Let’s Set Sail!  Kick off the summer at HRA.  Games, sports, crafts, and team building will get your camper ready for an awesome summer.  We will be out and about this week with field trips galore.  

Sticky, Wet & Wild! Come explore the senses and tactile experiences.  Campers explore everything wet, sticky, and gooey. Play in mud, then in the water to clean off.

Pirates, Princes, and Princesses!  Calling all pirates, princes, and princesses to join us as we visit mysterious lands.  Off we go to days when pirates ruled the seas and royalty ruled the land.  We make castles, crowns, sea monsters, pirate maps and more. ARRRRGGG, your majesty, this camp is filled with a bounty of games, activities, music and creative art experiences for our noble princes, princesses and sea-faring pirates!  

Navigate the World!  Pack your bags and grab your passports. We are off on a new adventure each day learning about different cultures/countries through games, music, foods and crafts.

Celebrate!  This week we will celebrate all things patriotic.  

 Invention Convention!  Problem-solve your way to the top!  Participate in fun challenges that stretch your thinking.  Egg drops and catapults will pave the way for you to create your own invention.  On Friday, present your finished product to your camp friends.  Participate in fun camp activities to charge up your brain!

Wind & Sea!  Fly a kite, visit the beach are just a couple of the activities you will participate in this week.

HRA Rockstars!  Music and more is what this week is all about.  Students are encouraged to bring in anything musical and we will play and sing all week long.  Karaoke is a must!

ACADEMICS

To prepare your student for Kindergarten, this camp will target lower case and upper case letter identification, sounds, and handwriting formation. We will also practice numeral recognition and basic mathematical skills of sorting, graphing, patterning, counting sets up to 20, addition, and subtraction in a hands on format with manipulatives. Skills will be practiced within the framework of a “Back to School” theme and as extensions to fictional literature selections.

This camp will include practicing skills to prepare your student for First Grade. We will cover letter identification, letter sounds, letter formation, reading strategies, and word attack skills. We will also engage in writing activities related to literature while covering the book knowledge basics of identifying the author, illustrator, and title as well as describing a story’s beginning, middle, and end. To practice math skills, we will review numeral identification and use manipulatives to complete activities involving number sense, addition, subtraction, and graphing.

This camp will include practicing skills to prepare your student for Second Grade. We will cover basic letter sounds and include blends, digraphs, and vowel teams while practicing reading independence strategies. We will also complete writing activities with an emphasis on recording complete thoughts with capitalization and end marks. For math skills we will review math facts up to 20 with hands on materials and with quick fact recall games. Practice with counting money, telling time, and fractions will also be included.

We’ve got spirit, YES, we do! We’ve got spirit, how about you? Come spend some time learning the basics of Cheerleading (motions, cheers, jumps and dances) from the Varsity Cheerleading Coaches at Hampton Roads Academy. Every day will be something new. Be ready to WOW the crowd with a short routine at the end of camp to show off all that you learned!

These camps will be directed by HRA Varsity Tennis Coach, Marvin Hedgepeth, who, in addition to coaching high school tennis for more than 30 years, has been a certified professional tennis instructor with the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) since 1988.

While beginner and intermediate camps will include physical conditioning, resistance training, and drills, the primary focus of the beginner camps will be learning how to properly execute the serve, forehand, and backhand. The intermediate camps will include more games and supervised play in both singles and doubles. Campers will be divided by level of play.

Fun and educational sailing program designed for beginners to learn basic sailing skills and to build on the skills of those sailors with prior experience. In addition to boat  handling skills, sailors are taught the value of teamwork, basic weather and tide forecasting, the importance of protecting the marine environment and maritime rules and regulations.

Day 1 of camp includes safety training, evaluation of swimming abilities, capsizing drill.

Camp is “rain or shine”. In the case of inclement weather, the instructors are prepared to keep the campers learning and having fun indoors. They will watch the weather and try to maximize the amount of time on the water when it is safe to do so.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn to rig and sail a variety of sailboats including Opti, Laser, and 420. Last day of camp includes a free pizza lunch, time for family to watch the participants sail, a slideshow of pictures from the week, and a certificate of completion.

All participants should bring the following with them to class each day:

  • Lunch – for each day of the session plus a snack
  • Water bottle; labeled with participant name.
  • Sunscreen
  • Bathing suit
  • Life vest (Personal Floatation Device, PFD) – Coast Guard approved and appropriately sized.
  • PFD can be provided from SYC with advanced notice.
  • Helmet (optional, but recommended. This can be bike helmet or sailing helmet)
  • Boat/water shoes – NO FLIP FLOPs
  • Sunglasses (recommended)
  • Towel 
  • Change of clothes
  • Backpack or bag to store personal items

Friday Fun Day: This is still a day of instruction, but we will have pizza at lunchtime. If you do not want your child to have food other than what you have sent with them, please notify us at check-in. On Fridays at 2 PM, parents/guardians have the option of watching from the pier to see what their children have learned during the week.

Fencing is a sport which builds character, confidence, and demands physical and mental discipline. Students at Miracle Fencing Club participate in drills, conditioning, and games which will build good fencing habits that will serve them at every level of competition. Students will learn the basics of fencing, including footwork and blade work, and also build their strategic knowledge and decision-making abilities.

Lunch not provided. Please pack a healthy lunch or drop off lunch at 12:00 noon. Lunch break will be between 12 pm and 12:40 pm. Please wear gym clothes and clean tennis shoes. Bring water, lunch, and snacks.

No equipment is needed, the club will provide.

Campers will be taken to the Miracle Fencing Club on HRA buses. The bus will leave HRA each promptly at 9:40am for a 10am camp start time and return to HRA by 2:20pm. Students may remain at HRA until camp dismissal at 4pm at no extra cost.

Are you ready to step up to the plate and refine your baseball skills? HRA’s Next Level Baseball Camp is designed for young athletes who are eager to learn, improve, and have fun! Whether you’re a beginner player looking to learn the basics or an experienced player aiming to sharpen your strategies, our camp will have something for everyone. Come develop a well-rounded set of baseball skills, gain confidence on and off the field, and learn from passionate and knowledgeable instructors!

Camp Highlights:

  • Personalized tips and techniques to enhance player performance
  • Drills for situational plays, defensive positioning, and smart base running 
  • Hitting and fielding practice using our two Hack Attack pitching machines
  • Scrimmages to implement what has been learned during practice sessions
  • Fun daily competitions

Instructor: Coach Tom Richardson, HRA Varsity Baseball Head Coach Tom Richardson has been coaching on the Peninsula for over 30 years, including 20 years as the manager of Williamsburg Post 39 Baseball as well as several years at Bruton High School and Queens Lake Middle School.  He has coached players at all levels and helped numerous players continue their careers into the college ranks. 

Improve your game in summer 2025 at this exciting new basketball camp at Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, VA! Sharpen your shooting technique, refine your positional play, enhance your ball-handling skills, and develop strategic gameplay tactics with expert guidance from top coaches and staff.

The Complete Skills Camp helps players of all abilities develop athletically, refine fundamental basketball skills and enhance their skill set at the post, wing or guard position.

This camp is designed for younger players who are just beginning their football career.  As a former Division 1 college coach I know that most summer football camps are designed for High School juniors and seniors as they begin to prepare for college.  This camp will be different.  The emphasis will be on teaching proper fundamentals.  This is a perfect camp for those who have not played football before.

This camp is designed for young girls who are new to the game of field hockey or looking to develop their basic skills in a fun, supportive environment. Over the course of the camp, participants will learn the fundamentals of field hockey, including stick handling, passing, shooting, and basic game rules with an emphasis on teamwork, building friendships, and learning how to work together on the field. There will be daily drills, small-sided games, and friendly competitions that make learning exciting. Whether your child has never played before or has just started, this camp will build confidence, improve fitness, and inspire a love for the game.

Instructor – Callie Poole recently completed her first year as the Head Field Hockey Coach at Hampton Roads Academy. A graduate of Norfolk Academy, she was part of a nationally ranked field hockey team that won two state championships during her time there. She went on to continue her field hockey career at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. With extensive experience coaching athletes of all ages, Coach Poole has been involved in the sport since the age of 11.

JUNIOR SCIENCES

Our new Astro Innovators Camp was developed in collaboration with NASA. Campers will engage in an action-packed week as they think and act like NASA innovators. Campers will be challenged to solve real-world engineering problems. Armed with the spark of an idea, a design notebook, and physical and digital tools, campers will design their own spacesuit, construct a robotic arm with popsicle sticks, and create a prototype for a Mars Rover made out of pasta! We help our campers ignite their creative thinking and shoot for the stars.

Build your own programmable robot! Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this week of camp, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you.

Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all – their mind! With a little ingenuity, children will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home, and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said “Invention is 10% inspiration, and 90% perspiration,” this camp is 100% FUN!

Explore five of the coolest branches of science on your way to becoming a certified Jr. Mad Scientist. Discover how birds fly and learn what an owl eats as we dissect owl pellets in Bird Biology; build towering structures and ingenious contraptions via Engineering; go crazy while you construct catapults, pulleys and levers in Machine Mania; stir-up a crazy concoction that becomes sidewalk chalk and create a chromatography t-shirt in Chemistry; then do a double take as you learn how optics really work in Lights and Sights!
