Welcome to Hampton Roads Academy, the only independent school on the peninsula! We are excited that you and your child are considering joining our school family. 

At HRA, we are more than just a place for students to learn—we are a community of families, alumni, faculty and team that supports our students in more than just their academic pursuits. We strive to support our students’ growth so that when they graduate, they are prepared to navigate the world beyond HRA as a well-rounded individual. Frequently Asked Questions About Our Admissions Process

We understand that families may have many questions about all aspects of the admissions process. Our Office of Admissions is committed to helping simplify that process as much as possible. We will help connect you with information about submitting an application, assist you in choosing which admissions event to attend, provide information about day-to-day life as a Navigator and more.

Our application for prospective students is conveniently located online and must be completed by a parent or guardian. Click here for detailed information about submitting an application to Hampton Roads Academy.

We accept applications on a rolling schedule—you can apply at any time! After we receive your application, we will reach out about scheduling an assessment.

We require an application fee of $75.00 upon submission. Please note that this fee is not refundable.

Need-based financial aid is available for Grades 5 through 12 and determined by each student’s demonstrated need for financial support. Once the enrollment agreement and deposit has been received for your student, you are eligible to begin the financial aid application. Assistance is granted on an annual basis and a new aid application must be submitted each year.

HRA offers monthly tuition payments, and tuition can also be pre-paid in full. There is no interest charged for payment plans, though the tuition refund plan is mandatory for all families electing not to pre-pay in full. Learn more about tuition payment plans.

After submitting your enrollment agreement and deposit for your student, you can submit an application for financial aid. Apply here.

Hampton Roads Academy admits students entering any grade, from Pre-Kindergarten through 11th grade. Rarely, a new student may be permitted to enter 12th grade under special circumstances. We operate on a rolling admissions process, and new student applications may be submitted at any point throughout the year.

Future students are welcome to visit our campus in Newport News to take a tour! Additionally, we offer admissions events such as Bites & Brews, Mornings At HRA, Walk In Wednesdays, Shadow Days and more to help future students and their families learn about our school.

Join our Parents Association  Facebook group for daily updates! This page is a great way to stay informed about school events, traditions and more. Additionally, the group hosts gatherings for new families both during the orientation process and during the first month of school. It’s a great way to meet other new families!

We aim to offer an accessible educational experience to every student who wishes to attend our school, starting with their application. We strive for a straightforward application process as much as possible, as applying should not be a barrier to attending our school. Before applying, we recommend completing the following steps:

1. Take A Tour

We encourage every interested student and their family to schedule an on-campus tour. Get a feel for our breathtaking campus and state-of-the-art facilities by taking a tour led by a member of our Office of Admissions! Before stepping foot on our campus, you and your future Navigator can also familiarize yourself with our school by taking a virtual tour.

2. Attend An Admissions Event

Witness our school and students in action by attending an admissions event! For your convenience, we offer Shadow Days, Walk-in Wednesdays for families of prospective Middle and Upper School students, and Mornings At HRA for families of prospective Pre-K through 12 students interested in learning more about the admissions process. We also offer more casual and fun admissions events for parents in the fall at breweries, wineries and more!

3. Learn More About How To Apply

Read all about our steps to apply, from filling out the online application to submitted transcripts, forms and attending the student interview. In order to successfully complete the application process, you and your student will need to make sure to finish every step!

4. Complete An Application

Ready to apply? Simply create an account and fill out our online application. In the meantime, our Office of Admissions is always available to help answer any questions about our school and provide guidance for completing the application.

5. Fill Out A Financial Aid Application

Need-based financial aid is offered for students in Grades 5 through 12, based on their demonstrated financial need. After submitting your enrollment agreement and deposit, you can start the financial aid application process. Assistance is awarded annually, reflecting your family’s current circumstances, and requires a new application each year.
