Safety Planning and Response Team (SPRT)

At Hampton Roads Academy, our Safety Planning and Response Team (SPRT) plays a central role in safety preparedness and response in support of the well-being of the entire HRA community. Through regular meetings, the SPRT collaborates across all divisions to plan, review and enhance emergency procedures and drills. This proactive approach allows us to stay abreast of best practices and continuously improve our safety protocols. Prevention through the relationships that we build with our students is crucial in maintaining a safe and healthy school community.

We maintain strong working relationships with the Newport News Police and Fire Departments. These collaborations, coupled with ongoing team and faculty training, ensure that our safety measures align with industry standards and are responsive to evolving needs. Drills and discussions about safety protocols are held throughout the school year, taking into consideration the developmental needs of our students. A trauma-informed approach to how safety is addressed with faculty, staff, and students and how drills are conducted is at the core of our philosophy of maintaining a safe community.

While our campus is welcoming, we prioritize controlled access to maintain a secure environment. Guests and visitors must sign in and out at our receptionist desk and obtain a Visitor’s pass before conducting any business on campus. To further enhance security, all other doors to the school remain locked throughout the day, and our campus is equipped with a comprehensive camera system, providing an additional layer of surveillance.

Inside our classrooms, safety measures are seamlessly integrated into daily routines. Classroom doors are locked throughout the day, contributing to a secure learning environment. SPRT members are equipped with radios, which coupled with our campus-wide PA system, ensures that swift communication occurs when needed in an emergency. Monthly tests of the PA system are conducted to ensure proper functioning.

A crucial layer of support is provided through our dedicated counselors. Recognizing the diverse challenges students may face, we ensure that access to counselors is available during the school day. Whether dealing with academic or social stress, developmental issues, or bereavement, students can turn to our counselors for empathetic assistance and support.

Our counselors employ solution-focused approaches to empower students, fostering the development of healthy problem-solving and coping skills. For students in need of more comprehensive interventions, our counselors facilitate connections with outpatient providers and other community resources. This ensures that every student receives tailored support to navigate challenges successfully.

Students are encouraged to seek out a counselor if they have concerns about a friend or classmate. Trust in our counselors is integral to our community dynamic, emphasizing the collective responsibility we share for each other’s well-being.

HRA encourages parents to contact a counselor with concerns about their child’s academic, social-emotional, or behavioral health. The counselors can collaborate with the student’s teachers and other important adults in the student’s HRA life to ensure that a network of support is in place.

At Hampton Roads Academy, the health and safety of our students are paramount. We have implemented comprehensive medical safety measures to ensure a secure and responsive environment.

Dedicated Medical Professional

We are proud to have a full-time Registered Nurse on campus every day. This dedicated professional maintains electronic medical records for the entire student body, ensuring a thorough understanding of each student’s medical conditions, needs, and allergies. This information is regularly updated and distributed to faculty and staff as needed, fostering a proactive approach to medical care.

Our commitment to medical safety extends to our faculty and staff, who undergo annual training in first aid, CPR, and AED use. This training equips our community with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to medical emergencies. Additionally, AED devices are strategically installed throughout the campus, providing quick access to life-saving equipment.

In the realm of athletics, we maintain a high standard of safety. A full-time Athletic Trainer is present at all home sporting events, ensuring immediate attention to any injuries. Our athletic coaches maintain CPR certification, further enhancing our ability to provide swift and effective medical assistance. HRA athletes engaged in contact sports undergo neuro-cognitive computerized baseline testing each season, reinforcing our commitment to their overall health.
